Below are the American Airlines carry-on and checked baggage limits for standard economy. Promotional and basic fares are often stricter, so check the rules of your own ticket before you fly.
| Carry-on bag | 56 × 36 × 23 cm One carry-on bag in addition to a personal item, the same in every class. The size includes handles and wheels; no weight limit is published. |
| Personal item | 45 × 35 × 20 cm A purse or small handbag that must fit under the seat in front of you. |
| Checked bag on the basic fare | not included in the basic fare, paid separately Inside the US, Main Cabin and Basic Economy fares pay for bags: 50 USD for the first one, 45 USD if paid online. A free bag is 23 kg and up to 158 cm in total dimensions. |
| Business Class | checked bag up to 32 kg |

Cabin bag size is measured over the outside — wheels, handles and pockets included; the sizer at the gate makes no allowances.
Weight is checked at random, but staff can weigh your bag at check-in or at the gate. An overweight cabin bag usually ends up in the hold at the aircraft door, and that costs more than buying baggage in advance.
Liquids in the cabin go in containers of up to 100 ml inside one transparent one-litre bag. That is an airport rule rather than an airline one, and countries apply it differently.
